After the demise of the Illinois varsity hockey program during World War II, the Illini Hockey club was Founded in 1956, and has evolved over the past 50+ years to become one of the elite teams in the American Collegiate Hockey Leagues Division I. The Illini have appeared in the ACHA national tournaments 13 out of the last 15 years, including 7 final four appearances, and becoming ACHA Division I champions in 2005 and again in 2008. The Illini are also members of the Central States Collegiate Hockey League, which consists of several teams throughout the midwest. Since joining the league in 1975, the Illini have captured the league tournament crown 5 times. The team plays their home games on the 'Big Pond', which is also known as the University of Illinois Ice Arena. Being conviently located on-campus, the majority of Illini home games are played in front of sell out crowds.
