The Illini completed their first sweep of the season with a 4-3 comeback win over the Redbirds on Sunday afternoon in Bloomington. The Illini fought for a 3-2 overtime win over Illinois State the night before. The Illini dominated the Redbirds from the opening face-off and it paid off as Drew Richter found the back of the ISU net 4:11 into the first period. Illinois State got a break just over the half-way point in the period as forward Mitchell Oberlag slipped the puck past Illini goaltender Elliot Gerth. The period would end with the Illini out shooting ISU 14 - 4, but the would be even at 1-1. In the second period the Illini would once again dominate the ice, out shooting ISU 13-7, but they could not find a way to get the puck past Redbird goaltender Adam Lindeman. ISU didn't have that same problem as they took the lead in the game at the 9:32 mark as Daniel Sarnecki put the puck past Gerth. The Redbird were frustrating the Illini in the first half of the third period, but the Illini would finally regroup and regain the lead scoring two quick goals. At the 11:24 mark Kacper Ryba would tie the game, and just 50 seconds later Evan Sabo would make it a 3-2 game. With just under five minutes to play in the game ISU's Jacob Ambrosat would fire a shot past Gerth making it a 3-3 game. ISU found themselves a man down late in the period, giving the Illini a power play chance, when they added to their problems with a major penalty for boarding, giving the Illini a two man advantage. The Illini capitalized on the opportunity scoring with 94 seconds left on the clock, and maintaining a man advantage for the remainder of the game. The Illini once again out-shot ISU for the period 11-4. The Illini start off the season 2-0 as they head into two home games this coming weekend against Michigan State. |
